Cover #3
Apr. 27th, 2008 | 08:59 pm

I had a pretty crappy week last week. Long weekend spent mostly working on stuff because I'm unable to just relax. I did this cover which I'm kind of happy with but still think it needs work.
Played the MGS Online Beta - kinda fun but missing something. Also played a lot of Zack and Wiki - almost finished it. Just in time for the avalanche of games coming in May - GTA 4, Lego Indy, Iron Man, Conan and probably a few others. Good thing I'm way ahead on the comic.

I am Legend...

They also have a gallery with some me looking like King Dorkus - but that is expected of me isn't it? I <3 my golden fertility idol.
Finally I think I've decided on what dog breed I want to get. I'm strongly leaning towards a Shiba Inu. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiba_Inu
I'm just hoping I find some breeders with puppy litters soon. I'm pretty much keen on all colors but I like the gold or the black coats. Does anyone have any experience with Shibas?

I've already run out of Wii puns...
Apr. 17th, 2008 | 10:07 pm
Joystiq - Joystiq hands-on: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed duel mode (Wii) - " The duel mode should be a rich addition to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. For casual fighting-game and Star Wars fans, these matches could almost be published as their own game."
GoNintendo - GoNintendo Impressions - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - "Thankfully, it seems like SW:TFU is a Star Wars game on Wii that’s worth getting excited about."

Wii love GT TV
Apr. 14th, 2008 | 09:11 pm
If you think you're sick of reading about the game now remember it's not out for another 5 months and there's plenty of cool stuff that LA plans to reveal yet. So sit back and enjoy.
Also today was quite possibly on of the best days at work I've had in years. Why? Well apart from getting a 21inch Cintiq there (like I use at home) last week I actually got to spend the day mostly drawing. And just stuff like pouches and belts and Kit's gauntlets, stuff that I've wanted to get around too for ages an now I can do them at work.
And what am I doing at home tonight? Drawing more BK characters for the game. This is what I live for.

Wii preview

They seemed to like it. And they've got some nice new shots as well. Finally something a little newer - I'm sick of seeing the REALLY old shots from the first batch of Wii screens.

So it begins...again
Apr. 11th, 2008 | 12:26 am
Today I put together the fist proper documentation for Blade Kitten.
A simple four page run through of the prologue which will also serve as our vertical slice demo. It contains one of every feature that I want to show off in the game. I'm sure much will change from now until the game gets released but its the first steps on a long journey that I'm happy to start on.
I feel really psyched and a little tired :)
In not so fun news this paid Live journal is about to run out so I figure it's about as good a time as any to move this elsewhere since I don't really talk about my boring life and also when I do get to do something interesting I usually can't talk about it anyway. Artwise I post more on Deviant art anyway. It just seems really quiet around here anyway and its just as easy for you to find my stuff on the other sites.
If you're reading this at www.spacecaptainsteve.com don't worry it will still be here, just in a different form.

T shirty
Apr. 8th, 2008 | 11:28 pm
I thought I'd try out Red Bubble with some new T shirt designs. I want to do some Blade Kitten shirts with a strong graphic bent as opposed to just pictures of characters and scenes. First one up is called "Noink!" and features a distressed look Skiffy emblem in white and red. It's designed to work on a dark shirt but I can easily pop out one for lighter colors if there's any interest.
You can get it and more info here... http://www.redbubble.com/people/falterda
I have thoughts for another couple of designs but I haven't really made any movement on that front until I see who this one turns out.

Supanova day 1
Apr. 5th, 2008 | 10:04 pm
I got to hang out with some Kromans, pimp out SW:TFU and Blade Kitten. Talk to some interesting and ..."interesting" people. I signed a bunch of Blade Kitten comics and posters not really any more than a handfull but it was just cool to be able to hand people actual copies. And you can't beat hugs from the bestest catwoman in town.
Tomorrow looks to be another busy, fun day with more panels and talks and stuff. I've decided to wear my Indy "costume" for the day. I say costume but really if I take the hat off it's the same sort of gear I wear when I'm supposed to be in smart casual :). I'm such a dork it's amazing.
Here's a link to the webdoc at game trailers for all the lazy sods who probably couldn't be bothered looking it up on the site. Look the static image is even a nice shot of Phobos for you!
People, he's talking about my characters here!
And my new favorite past time is scouring the star Wars forums to read people's theories about the backgrounds to the characters. It's the awesome!

New TFU Webdoc
Apr. 4th, 2008 | 07:49 pm
The Force Unleashed site has been completely updated with a lot of new stuff.Go check it out especially the latest webdoc "The TFU Experience" which is mostly about the Wii, PS2,PSP version of the game and features a lot of footage of the game in action so you can finally see what I've been crapping on about for the last year. Please not the appearance of the yellow jacket as well as my two Darths (there's a TV show that needs to be made)
http://www.lucasarts.com/games/theforceu
The other cool thing is you can finally hear some of the awesome score - Which is one of my favorite bits of the game because I didn't have do anything for it. I just get to be blown away whenever we get new music to put in.
Don't forget I'll be at Supanova this weekend with Blade Kitten comics and I'll be doing panels and a talk with some behind the scenes stuff.

Gamepro cover
Apr. 2nd, 2008 | 07:57 pm
We got the cover of the latest Gamepro AND most of the write up is for the Wii version.
Which they liked... a lot.
The online version is here http://www.gamepro.com/nintendo/wii/game
There's a nice shot of my gal, Darth Phobos fighting the apprentice from the Jedi temple. Fans will be able to tell the only part of the Jedi Special Edition I liked and there's a little nod to battle of Endor in her too.
The only problem with the article is them intoning that we didn't focus on giving the Wii HD visuals like the PS3 and 360. Sorry but no, that was Nintendo's doing not ours the Wii can do 480P that's if folks there's no other magic in it.
Don't forget to come to Supanova this weekend to see glorious me in action or... inaction.

Old robots never die...
Mar. 31st, 2008 | 10:03 pm

I have a folder full of old drawings scanned in that I mean to do something with.
One of these was the sketch on the left. I liked a lot of the shape but it just felt weird, squashed. It's been sitting around since 1998. And yes I know it's very Shirow-like, I was much more into that when I was younger but can you blame me? (and just about every other mech designer out there)
SO I decided to update the design. I took the scan - sliced it up in Photoshop to fit over a different proportioned mech, so I could make this a different model. That fixed up all the problems I had with the original. That was completely by accident.
As for the name "Hedrax", well that was the name of the mech in the first comic story I aver had published. And that was nearly 20 years ago. ...memories...

Some SW:TFU news...
The game made the cover of PlayStation: The Official Magazine. There's a big 8 page article with some shots and info on the PS2 and PSP versions. It's mostly about the next gen versions but that's to be expected. The one to get is the Wii version but that's not going to appear in a Sony mag is it? When the editor of the mag was playing the PSP version he was so wrapped in it they had to pry the PSP from his hands. A lot of people are blown away by what the PSP version is doing - If it wasn't available on every other console it would be reason to buy a PSP. The PS2 version is easily going to be the last best PS2 ever (It would have been God of War 2 but we're better)
I've also got a bunch more TFU toys - Titanium Rogue Shadow = Cool, Unleashed - unleashed figures (you know the packs of four figures that aren't posable). Still waiting on the rest of the figures - I ended up finding an assortment that had doubles of the Stormtroopers so I ordered that - They ship in May. But I did get the Secret Aprrentice Evolutions set. The Sith figure is pretty spot on to the costume in game - the others are good but the Heads don't look enough like Sam (The actor who plays the SA) and the hair is all wrong. Still it's a cool set of figures.
Some Game news
I've been playing a lot of "Patapon" on PSP and "Zack and Wiki" on Wii.
Patapon is fun but has a few humps in the gameplay that can easily stop you. They're basically questionable design decisions that hamper the fun. If you slog past them some really fun gameplay opens up. I like to call it a kind of RTS (Rhythm Turn Stategy) and it is a lot deeper than it initially looks.
Zack and Wiki is Capcom's answet to a modern day console point and click adventure. It's basically a set of room based puzzle locations with Wii motion controls to manipulate objects. Control is all handle via the remote with the player pointing to where they want to go or what the want to interact with. Like Sierra adventures you die a lot if you do the wrong thing but since the puzzle are limited to one room its not such a bad thing. You can also use money you collect to buy hints and extra chances between rooms. All in all it's presented well and looks great. The only problem is you can't really sit back and play since you have to interact a lot and you get a sore arm too.

The great art weekend.

What Iron Man would look like in the Steve Universe - done for a Project: Rooftop comp. Normally I never get time to enter these things but this one worked out well. I'm also thing of doing a totally different kind of look now that I've got the one out of my system.
( Check out the cut to see some more )

I'm back.. again...
Mar. 21st, 2008 | 12:20 pm
A bit late but Arthur C Clarke's passign reminded me of my favorite episode of "The Goodies" (which for the uninitiated out there was a show that I gre up on that's about a thousand times funnier than Monty Python - and I like Python.) But I'll let Wikipedia fill you in...
The goodies did a parody of Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World (itself a great show back in '80) and it's still one of my favorite episodes.

Cool Stuff I got at Wondercon
Feb. 26th, 2008 | 04:41 pm
The Good News - it was pretty good and I got to briefly catch up with some friends as well.
The Bad New - I came down with a Bad Flu and was in bed for two and a bit days. I did drag myself out of bed once or twice to get out but it was a bad idea. To make matters worse my global roaming on the phone didn't want to play nice with other phones and I got messages late and people were unable to get through to me. My apologies to Brad and Joel - at least I got to see you guys for a little bit.
As much as I wanted to just keep sleeping through Saturday I dragged myself over to Wondercon for a bit. It is very much as smaller version of San Diego. That's not a bad thing either - crowds were just the right size. I saw a bunch of cool toys but I resisted buying lots of them except for this guy from SW:TFU. I'll tell you more about his story after the game comes out.
